Abstract
We review the issues arising in the design of integrated optical "circuits" in structures of high index contrast. Microwave design principles may be called upon for the tentative layout of structures of desired functionality. First and foremost is the issue of radiation. High index contrast waveguides allow very small bending radii, which in turn permit interconnections of closely spaced structures.
