Abstract
Application of symmetry properties to the design of 2-D FIR digital filters possessing frequency responses without any easily identifiable symmetry is described in this paper. This is accomplished by decomposing the given frequency response into a number of components each of which possesses some form of symmetry. To this end, a procedure to carry out such a decomposition is developed. Use of this decomposition in optimization based 2-D FIR filter design is discussed. Examples show that this procedure requires less computation time than the conventional methods.
