  • Abstract
Signal processing sub-systems for digital switching systems must perform a variety of functions from decoding Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) tones to producing automated announcements. Significant cost and development advantages are gained if these duties can be performed by a single, programmable hardware architecture. Such a sub-system, the Digital Service Unit, has been designed for the 5ESSTMswitch. Its architecture takes advantage of new DSP technology and aggressive application of VLSI to achieve a low-cost, compact, and easily programmable real-time digital signal processing sub-system for the digital switching environment. It represents the first system use of the recently designed WE®DSP32 digital signal processor.
