Abstract :
A hybrid pattern recognition machine is presented for the classification of place and manner of articulation categories in continuous speech. Qualitative speech knowledge is represented declaratively as an augmented context-free grammar. This representation is supported at each category by probabilistic classifiers which enable an underlying quantitative description to be learned from examples of training data. Motivating factors for feature extraction and choice of category and structure in phonetic IKBS are discussed.
