Abstract :
The transfer function of a SONAR target can be defined in both frequency and space domain. It is directly related to the target\´s scattering function and consequently to its geometrical shape. Modelling a SONAR target by a "generalized transversal filter" can help in describing many acoustical phenomena. The echo processing is designed under natural environmental constraints. The receiver\´s structure and performances imply conditions on the emitted signal. Such a signal has been synthesized and emitted on simple shape targets. A set of characteris" tic parameters has been established for each target.
