Abstract
High voltage DC transmission technology is commonly be used for long distance bulk power transmission and asynchronously connecting two AC power grids. China is a country with vast power supply area and population, deviation between locations of generations and loads, mountainous landforms, and limited quantity of right of way. More HVDC transmission projects with long distance, high voltage and large capacity will be constructed to meet the requirement of power transmission from the hydropower stations developed in the western area to the load centers in the east. The distance between two power grids is too long to adopt AC for interconnection. Back to back HVDC links will be used for interconnection. This paper discusses HVDC in China as well as TCSC and STATCOM development.
