Abstract :
We present a new technique for improving the throughput in a code-division multiple-access cellular communication system. The technique that we propose takes advantage of the use of power control in the forward link. We select pairs of users that require significantly different transmission powers. Nonuniform signaling is used to add an additional message to the signal sent with the higher transmission power The user whose signal has the lower transmission power demodulates its usual message and also extracts the additional message from the signal transmitted with the higher power The throughput can be doubled to many users in the system with only a very small increase in interference to adjacent cells.
