Abstract
The proposed work is a probabilistic location, management strategy in a cellular mobile environment. The entire area covered by the cellular architecture is considered as a hierarchy of location areas considering the mobile switching centre (MSC) as the root of the hierarchy. The mobile switching centre maintains an indexed database to keep the frequency of traversal of all the visiting mobile units in the cells under it. When a call arrives for a particular mobile unit, the mobile switching centre computes the location probability of the called mobile unit at all the nodes under it with the help of frequencies associated with those nodes corresponding to the called mobile unit in the database and perform the best first search to find the best probable cell(s) where the desired mobile unit may be traced. Finally, experiments are carried out to see the variation of system cost with time simulating the movement pattern by a Gaussian distribution.
