Abstract
In this paper we propose a theoretical framework for modelling a large complex industrial system, namely, an oil-sand extraction process. We argue that a hybrid systems approach is most appropriate in this case. Hybrid models for most of the essential system submodules are presented and advantages of the proposed hybrid approach are indicated.
