Abstract
In the future 3G/4G networks all network and service management and control tasks can be Policy Based managed. As the wireless network becomes more and more complex new multilevel and hierarchical control methods will be needed. The most promising method to solve this dilemma is using management or control policies instead of discrete device and service parameterization. Policies can be hierarchical so that every layer defines the environmental threshold in their own terms. Each of the abstract levels will then be refined to the next lower level until the final usually device depended parameterization have been reach. Each of the upper levels compared to the previous lower level gives much more degrees of freedom compared to the traditional network element level parameterization due to the fact that higher-level ruling can be quite freely defined with upper level terms, which are then interpreted to lower level. This paper contemplates the possibilities to deploy policy based management and control in the wireless 3/4G environment.
