Abstract :
Introduces and details Wetnet as both a direct line-of-sight and long range, over-the-horizon communication solution for autonomous underwater vehicles, unmanned surface vehicles and other marine platforms. Wetnet is a wireless network solution utilizing modified wireless networking protocol adapted to the unique communication environment encountered at the ocean´s surface. This paper summarizes 802.11 wireless technology, and discusses the system design issues when applying this technology to a non-conventional ocean environment. The paper illustrates how WetNet may be applied for various multi-client, marine networks at extended RF slant ranges.
