Abstract
We propose a hippocampal CA3 model with excitatory neurons and inhibitory neurons by using Hodgkin-Huxley equations and investigate oscillatory phenomena in the model. We assume that there are two layers of neurons with inter-layer and intra-layer synaptic connections; one is a layer of excitatory neurons and the other a layer of inhibitory neurons. The results by numerical simulations show that theta and gamma oscillations occur on the layer of excitatory neurons and also on the layer of inhibitory neurons and reveal that synaptic strengths influence dominant oscillations on each layer. This implies that the interplay between the excitatory and the inhibitory neurons is essential for the generation of theta and gamma oscillations.
