Abstract :
A fully transparent nation-wide optical network is hardly feasible due to difficulty in overcoming transmission impairments introduced by nonlinearities; chromatic and polarization-mode dispersion; noise accumulated due to ASE and other degradations. It is widely accepted that a next-generation optical network will have both opaque and transparent nodes. This hybrid model has received the name of translucent network. Different strategies for designing translucent wide-area network (TWAN) have been proposed. This work considers two strategies for designing a TWAN. The former considers that every node may bypass or regenerate a lightpath depending on the accumulated impairments. The latter considers that optical transparent domains (islands of transparency) are interconnected via hub nodes equipped with regenerators.
