Abstract
Optical fibers with air holes in their cross-section can deliver previously unimaginable performance. They represent an alternative fiber technology which is at a relatively early stage of development, but which can already outperform conventional fibers in certain respects. Photonic crystal fibers provide a wonderful arena for scientists in disciplines such as nonlinear optics and fiber design.
