Abstract :
A very flexible transmission system for multimedia over mobile Internet is proposed. For a mobile Internet scenario, a combination of a lossy packet data network and a mobile network is assumed. Conventional solutions are based on a separation of both networks. The new system is able to manage both packet losses and bit errors in a single decoding step without any transcoding. Furthermore, the system can be adapted easily to the current channel states of both networks in a very flexible way with a minimum of signalization overhead. In a simulation example, the performance of the new system is shown for short block-length speech transmission using recursive systematic convolutional codes, and for large block-length data transmission using a parallel concatenated convolutional code.
