Abstract
This paper describes how an SVC that had seen service at an electric arc furnace facility in Arizona was moved to the UK and used as a load balancer for a locomotive test track. The original duty and rating is described. The new load is described together with the requirements for the load balancer. The SVC was inspected in its original location and certain parts of it were shipped back to the factory for refurbishment and modification. To enable the SVC to be operated in the UK at different frequency, auxiliary voltage and bus voltage, various modifications were carried out to the equipment as described in the paper. Some new equipment was required for the new duty as described in the paper. The performance of the load balancer at its new location is described.
