Abstract :
This paper focuses on adaptive control of smart structures with simultaneous precision positioning and vibration suppression capabilities. First, the structure, manufacturing, and test of an active composite panel (ACP) with surface-mounted piezoelectric ceramic patches are introduced. Three adaptive control schemes are then presented, which are adaptive feedforward control (AFC), adaptive internal model control (AIMC), and hybrid adaptive control (HAC) schemes. The advantages and disadvantages of each scheme are discussed. Finally, the three adaptive control schemes are experimentally verified on the ACP, and comparisons are made. For vibration suppression, the AFC and HAC can eventually suppress the entire vibration, with the HAC generating a faster reduction. The AIMC can provide the fastest vibration reduction but some small residual vibration still remains. For simultaneous precision positioning and vibration suppression, the AFC, AIMC, and HAC sequentially produce more accurate positioning, and the HAC makes the best tradeoff between the fastness of the positioning and vibration suppression as well as the accuracy of the position.
