Abstract
Selection of models suitable for use in the design of a synchronous generator, either with a field winding or magnet excitation, is important. Several criteria need to be met: for practical use, the model has to be simple enough to allow expeditious computation toward establishing design features, yet it has to be of high enough fidelity to do so with acceptable accuracy. Conventional impedance models are commonly employed in the design of a.c. machines, and can meet the criteria. This paper demonstrates how a practically viable impedance model can be formed to aid in the design of a permanent magnet synchronous generator.
