Abstract :
The exploding popularity of the World Wide Web has led to exponentially increasing traffic on the Internet. In this paper, we have analyzed the performance of pseudo-serving technique for reducing the congestion at server side in temporarily busy web servers by making a testbed named JServRMRS. We have used the concept of prime and virtual severs. They share the resources on contractual basis. A peculiar characteristic in our testbed is that prime and virtual servers can interchange their roles, if the need arises, as opposed to the original pseudo-serving technique. We have evaluated the performance of the approach by considering four types of flash crowd configurations. Each configuration represents different kind of load for the participating servers. The main performance metric we have considered is average normalized response time. We have observed through our testbed that server side congestion can be reduced significantly for temporarily busy sites by the use of above technique.
