Abstract :
Clinical application of neural prosthetic technology raises a multitude of questions about neuromuscular anatomy and physiology. Such knowledge can be used to identify efficient and effective sites at which to apply stimulation and to identify stimulation parameters that are likely to produce the desired therapeutic effects. The scientific literature is often surprisingly patchy when it comes to making such decisions, but recently developed methodologies provide many useful tools. These have led us to a number of novel approaches that are now being tested in preclinical and clinical trials.
