Abstract
The idea of a toothed air gap in the longitudinal direction is not new but despite of the promising magnetic performances no thoroughgoing investigation was made yet. Therefore in this paper are discussed the results of the finite element analysis applied to various shapes of the longitudinal teeth. The analysis focuses on the flux pattern in the air gap, in the iron regions around the air gap, on the flux density distribution in the air gap and the effect of the non-cylindrical air gap on the flux linkage characteristics. The study ends by the selection of the optimum configuration to be implemented in a demonstration machine.
