Abstract :
Algorithms for snow mapping in Alpine areas are developed for the medium resolution imaging spectrometers MODIS and MERIS. A snow classification algorithm, discriminating snow cover in forested areas and open terrain, is presented. Examples of snow cover products are shown for MODIS data. The need for improvement, mainly related to snow/cloud discrimination, is addressed. In addition, the albedo of snow surfaces was derived from at-satellite radiances, applying a model for atmospheric radiative transfer. Capabilities and weaknesses of the model are discussed.
