Abstract :
The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Earth Explorer Opportunity Mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) aims to provide a global and precise soil moisture estimation over land and salinity content over oceans from the L-band radiometer MIRAS. The accuracy of salinity retrieval algorithms, which are iterative methods, directly depends on the accuracy of the sea surface emissivity models and on the sea surface spectrum applied for characterizing the sea roughness. This paper presents an inter-comparison study of the most popular emissivity models when they are used for estimating the brightness temperature of the sea surface at L-band. The influence of the spectrum model has been also studied.
