Abstract :
The condition to maintain the power factor more than 0.90 at bus, imposed by electric utility, in turn, requires to use power factor compensating network . Further these capacitor banks of power factor compensating circuit is often required to be switched "off and "on" as a function of load on bus using switch gear. This in turn, generates transients, which affects on performance of load or may damage load or put stringent requirements on the circuit breaker. At the same time different type of circuit breaker also affects transients and may, in turn, assess in selection of circuit breaker. This work after literature survey describes the test set-up for measurement of transient in a power system and equipment used. Subsequently the observations under different conditions are presented and discussed in form of tables and oscillograms. Finally it is concluded with recommendation, the test results suggest that the gas circuit breaker are preferred over oil circuit breaker, better with respect to rate of change of inrush current, transient inrush current, transient frequency. However with respect to transient over voltage oil circuit breaker is slightly better than gas circuit breaker.
