Abstract
Italy is widely involved in a photovoltaic program, ranging from research on materials and devices, development and experimentation on both grid-connected and stand-alone power plants to technology diffusion through market promotion. ENEA (the Italian agency for new technology, energy and environment), CESI (Institute for research and certification of electric components and systems), ENEL spa (the largest Italian utility), the ministry for the environment and land protection (MATT), all the Italian regions and some Italian PV industries are the most active operators. The paper provides a general overview on the present day activities and future perspectives in the field of RD&D, industry and market development with a particular emphasis on the Italian roof-top programme.
