The paper deals with the global CO/sub 2/ emission, population growth, energy and electricity demands and progress in renewable energy. Examples are cited from both developed and developing countries with a concentration on photovoltaic applications. The land mark achievements are demonstrated in photovoltaic sector, wind energy industries and the biomass technology area. The growth of hydro power, solar thermal applications and geothermal energy are discussed and demonstrated. Some recommendations are put forward to speed up the use of renewable energy in all sectors and to motivate industry to a much faster pace than before.
