Abstract
Flexible wireless communication systems capable to operate within multistandard, multimode, and multiservice environments, achieved through software reconfigurability, form another revolution in wireless communications. Adaptive spectrum management, quality of service on demand, smart management of hardware resources, and reduction in the cost of wireless services are examples of this, new emerging technology´s benefits, so called software defined radio (or software radio SR). Evaluation and experimentation platforms are fundamental tool at research and development stages, described in this paper. We demonstrate the architecture and specifications of several such platforms used for developing SRs then we conclude with an outlook of SR research experimentation trends.
