Abstract
The photoinduced birefringence in bacteriorhodopsin film was investigated and its application for all-optical switching explored. The photoinduced birefringence is dependent on the intensity of the pumping and probing beams. We demonstrated an all-optical switch with good dark state and ∼1000:1 contrast ratio, based on the photoinduced birefringence in a bacteriorhodopsin film.
