Abstract :
Attenuation due to rain is significant in satellite communications using frequencies of higher than 10 GHz, such as Ku band (14-12 GHz) and Ka band (20-30 GHz). Even in the Ku band, rain attenuation is very severe in heavy rain regions like South-East Asia. This study investigates the nature of rain attenuation in the equatorial region, using received signal levels of the satellite link which connects Equatorial Atmospheric Radar (EAR), Kototabang, Indonesia and Radio Science Center for Space and Atmosphere (RASC), Kyoto University. The observation systems we set up for this study in both earth stations are briefly described. The first year results on rain attenuation statistics in the equatorial region are presented.
