Abstract
This paper briefly discusses the importance of automating and communicating with distribution equipment. Then, the bulk of the text focuses on available communication technologies and the pros and cons of each. Information used in the following paper has been accumulated over years of research and experience in the wireless industry. It has been compiled here to help utility engineers better understand the various communication options that can be used to automate distribution equipment. These include: power line carrier; landlines; and wireless options.
