Abstract
Over recent years the dead tank concept which was inherited from bulk oil technology has shifted towards dog-house designs. The paper describes the features of a new generation of dead tank circuit breakers based on a design which has been developed using modern technical features such as vacuum interruption, oil free, gas insulation, and a sealed for life concept. The application of these technologies has resulted in a new generation of switchgear which combines the advantages of the old dead tank concept with the benefits of modern technology, bringing the dead tank concept right up to date.
