Abstract :
This paper presents a new formalism, based on the application of the Generalized Telegrapher´s Equations (GTE) to model and design integrated electro-optical devices. In this approach we eliminate the restrictions, introduced in the past by some models, such as weakly guiding condition and isotropic unperturbed medium, while providing at the same time to value the modulator time response for a generic modulating signal. The only hypothesis we made to derive the linear model are the presence of a small dielectric perturbation and a high difference between the optical and modulating signal frequencies. The model has been applied to a GaAs phase modulator.
