Abstract :
In order to extend the cell coverage of upcoming cellular system, This work proposes a novel routing algorithm based on ad hoc networking. The utilization of mobile ad hoc nodes as relays for calls designated to base stations greatly improves the flexibility of cellular networks. The protocol is able to increase the distance between adjacent base stations and reduces the cost of deployment. As networks do not require direct links between mobiles and base stations, they circumvent shadowing effects and therewith simplify base station positioning. It also increases the overall system capacity by bypassing blocked base stations. Ad hoc routing for coverage extension (ARCE) allows mobiles to connect to the closest base station with sufficient resources. Simulations show, that ARCE outperforms existing ad hoc network protocols with regards to packet loss and routing overhead. The evaluation suggests that our protocol with its multipaths approach improves the overall performance of radial symmetric networks.
