Abstract :
Luminescent decay measurements and modeling of high-power erbium-ytterbium amplifier fibers reveal significant ytterbium to erbium secondary energy transfer plus non-participatory ytterbium ions not coupled to the erbium. Both phenomena will lower efficiencies of erbium-ytterbium amplifiers.
