Abstract
A new metric is proposed for multiple-symbol differential-detection of phase noise-impaired binary differential phase-shift-keying (DPSK) signals. The performance of the proposed metric is evaluated in terms of the overall bit error rate (BER) using analytical means. It is assumed that the observation interval extends over three consecutive symbol intervals and that the received signal is corrupted by oscillator phase noise.
