Abstract
This work presents a characterization of several random variables related to cellular mobile telephony in a network that uses dynamic channel allocation (DCA). These variables are characterized by means of their statistical distributions. A simulation tool has been developed in order to achieve this characterization. The simulator implements the performance of a UMTS network (as an example of a DCA network), taking into account issues such as power management and call access control. The simulator provides data about channel holding time, time between two consecutive handoffs (handoff traffic characterization) and handoff duration, along with quality of service information about the simulated environment. Numerical results are analyzed and conclusions drawn.
