Abstract
With the increasing popularity of universal plug and play (UPnP), the impact of UPnP advertisements on network congestion, user experience and power dissipation of small electronics have often been a concern. The problem escalates when a Bluetooth® (BT) personal area network (PAN) is bridged to a fixed Ethernet network in the digital home architecture, in which the number of advertisements going from the Ethernet to the BT PAN network can be huge. Therefore, this paper aims to study the potential impact of UPnP advertisements on user experiences and power consumption with a mobile phone running an UPnP control point. With this study, new mechanisms in power saving or performance improvement of the UPnP protocol can be proposed in the future.
