Abstract
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic performance of threshold-based timing acquisition systems having fixed dwell time in multipath fading channels. We show that if the system involves the comparison of a decision statistic to a threshold in order to detect the true symbol timing, then it may not be possible to make the average probability of error in acquisition arbitrarily small, even if the signal-to-noise ratio increases without bound.
