Abstract :
The power systems demand in Botswana is about 243 MW. The sole coal fired electricity generation station generates flat and supplies 128 MW. The remaining deficit is supplied by ESKOM of South Africa and from the Southern Africa Power pool (SAPP). The Botswana network is expanding due to development projects and rural electrification, leading to changes in its topology. In this paper, the grid network in Botswana is used as a case study to provide insight into planning data based on simulated contingency conditions and consequent system losses. The network is modeled using the power systems simulation software, ARISTO. A power flow study is carried out to determine the initial system data regarding voltage profiles and power injections at substations. The contingency conditions are specified as different scenarios of the grid network model given the selected events fired during the simulation. The results of voltage and power profiles are tabulated and compared with known values. Suggestions are presented to improve the performance of the network
