Abstract :
This article analyzes the NTBF (new technology based, firm) based upon the new framework of dynamic firm capability (DFC) to identify the different capabilities required at each growth stage. In this paper an attempt is made to emphasize the process, which is one of the major components (path, position, process) within the DFC. The underlying hypothesis is that process should be different from the firm´s characteristic at each growth stage. More specifically, we will argue how the sub-components such as coordination, integration, and reconfiguration, would be differently operated and related to achieve a firm´s final goal. Research methodology includes the case study involving structured interview and data collection from two leading Korean ICT (information communication technology) firms. One firm spun off from the university has accumulated the innovative capability in the technological boundary. On the other hand, the other firm retained the technological trajectory and formulated a strong point in terms of marketing competence. By analyzing those two different NTBFs, we find the strategic successful factors based upon the evolutionary point of view. It is a key contribution of this paper to study on the process mechanism of NTBFs, and to explain detailed process mechanism by viewing two different characteristics of the firm at the functional level.
