Abstract :
In this paper, the author present the importance of strategic values, i.e., learning, leadership, and resilience (LLR), to craft the solid and sustainable innovation strategies. It is a general practice to identify and analyze the most profitable innovation opportunities using financial tools such as EVA, NPV, ROI, etc. The author argue that the organization´s exclusive focus on profitability itself is a first step to its long-term failure. The author recommend that the organization should adopt a balanced approach that values an investment/innovation opportunity on multiple dimensions including profitability, learning, leadership, and strategic resilience (and other factors that are or can become the key sources of competitive differentiation). The proposed change in approach generates innovations that do not only yield huge economic benefits in the long run, but also position the company for a dependable and sustainable competitive advantage. Continual acquisition and deployment of tangible and more importantly intangible assets (i.e., learning, knowledge, intellectual property, people, processes, skills, network, culture, drive, etc.) are the key characteristics of such innovative organizations. To these organizations, the creativity, uniqueness, and learning are the essence of innovation and leveraging that for sustainable competitive advantage is the essence of a successful business strategy. For these innovative organizations LLR continuously pushes the envelope of what is possible and what can be possible, serving as a catalyst to transform the impossible into the possible.
