Abstract
The paper discusses a novel algorithm (new quantized DCT - NQDCT) that combines the DCT with the quantizer to achieve energy scalability in a DCT based multimedia codec. A thorough analysis of the algorithm is presented. Simulation results show that a 15% reduction in computational energy can be obtained in an implementation of an MPEG coder over a wide range of bit-rate when compared to that of the standard MPEG coder test model.
