Abstract :
The STAR Experiment at RHIC is doing both heavy ion physics, looking for the quark-gluon plasma, and also proton spin physics, primarily investigating the gluon contribution to the proton spin. The barrel and endcap electromagnetic calorimeters in STAR are nearing completion. These have already been used for jet triggering for jet quenching measurements in conjunction with the time projection chamber (TPC). Both of these calorimeters are of lead-scintillator sandwich construction, with small tower size appropriate to the multiplicities in heavy ion events. They have different types of shower-maximum detectors. The construction, operation, and present and planned physics from these detectors will be discussed. More information is available at the STAR web site, including lists of both physics and instrumentation publications.
