Abstract :
A generic and intelligent 155 Mb/s burst mode laser driver chip was designed in digital 0.35 µm CMOS. The test results show that this chip supports most commercially available FSAN compliant laser diodes with excellent performance. An innovative digital algorithm in combination with a sophisticated level monitoring circuit results in a very fast initialisation (within 2.6µs in worst case) and accurate tracking of the optical power with a maximum tolerance of 0.84 dB over the full temperature and power supply range. A laser drive current up to 120 mA can be set with a resolution of 0.08 mA.
