Abstract
A viable optical header processor module is proposed for integration within optical packet switches. The processor employs optical Y switches (Janz et al., 2003) as switching elements with bi-stable photodetectors (Jajszczyk and Mouftah, 1993). The achievable rate can potentially exceed 40Gbps and the header can be modulated at the same rate wavelength and modulation scheme as the payload. The proposed scheme can support multicasting and broadcasting.
