Abstract :
High in the Andes, a train loaded with sulphuric acid tanks negotiates the spectacular mountain line from the Portrerillos copper smelting plant towards Llanta and Diego de Almagro. Although Chilean company Ferronor owns around 2,300km of the country??s old `Red Norte?? northern network, landslides, washouts and rail theft mean that less than half is in use, mainly for transporting mining supplies and products.
