Abstract
This paper proposes a fuzzy rule-based system for estimating the surface roughness by ultrasonic waveform. Our estimation method consists of three steps. The first step extracts characteristic values from an object with known surface roughness. The second step constructs fuzzy membership functions with respect to characteristic values. At the final step, the fuzzy rule-based system estimates the surface roughness of an object with unknown surface roughness. Moreover, we propose a method for removing noise of the result by using characteristic value of ultrasonic echo. We applied this method to phantom with three kinds of surface roughness. Then, our system can successfully estimate the roughness of the phantom
