  • Abstract
The CAATS project is seeking to spread good practice in human factors (HF), safety and validation to European air traffic management (ATM) projects. The human is an essential component of complex systems, and there is experience from several domains that HF is necessary for success but can be difficult to integrate. The CAATS human factors team is organising a coherent approach for a set of HF ´key elements´ intended to help HF practitioners, project managers and researchers to make more effective and efficient use of HF knowledge and practices in their projects. The CAATS team is developing a guide to good practice, and works with a representative set of European ATM target projects to demonstrate its effectiveness, and to gain feedback for further improvements. The outputs should be an enhanced understanding of project needs, and how safety and human factors can be integrated more effectively into the research and development processes, within the framework of a proven validation process.
