Abstract
Cross-phase and cross-absorption modulation in an EAM were quantitatively characterized for the first time. Drastic reduction in power penalty from 5 dB to 1.5 dB in 40 Gbit/s wavelength conversion was confirmed owing to blue-shift of the bandgap wavelength of the EAM
