Abstract
In this paper we compare two different approaches to protecting an IP backbone: (1) MPLS based restoration at the IP layer, and optical shared mesh restoration at the optical layer. We argue that optical layer restoration is superior from the point of view restoration performance. Using traffic data from commercially deployed IP backbones, we show that optical layer restoration reduces network cost significantly.
